Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about TREKFAR roof tents

General Questions

What is a roof tent?
A roof tent (also called a rooftop tent or RTT) is a tent that mounts on top of your vehicle's roof rack or crossbars. It opens and closes quickly, providing an elevated, comfortable sleeping space for camping adventures. TREKFAR roof tents can be set up in under 60 seconds and sleep 2-4 people depending on the model.
Why choose a roof tent over a regular tent?
Roof tents offer several advantages: instant setup (60 seconds vs 20+ minutes), elevated sleeping position away from ground moisture and wildlife, built-in mattress for superior comfort, weatherproof construction, and compact storage on your vehicle. They're perfect for spontaneous camping trips and don't take up interior space.
How much do TREKFAR roof tents weigh?
Our roof tents range from 110 lbs (2-person models) to 165 lbs (4-person models). This weight includes the tent shell, fabric, mattress, and mounting hardware. Most vehicles can support 150-200 lbs of dynamic roof load. Always check your vehicle's specifications before purchase.
What's included with my roof tent?
Every TREKFAR tent includes: the tent shell and fabric, high-density foam mattress (2.5" thick), telescoping ladder, mounting brackets and hardware, weatherproof cover, storage bag, and detailed installation instructions. Crossbars or roof rack are sold separately if your vehicle doesn't have them.
Can I leave the tent on my vehicle year-round?
Yes, TREKFAR tents are built to withstand year-round weather. However, we recommend removing it during extreme winter months if not in use to reduce wear and improve fuel efficiency. If leaving it on, ensure the tent is completely dry before closing and check mounting bolts monthly.

Installation

How long does installation take?
With 2-3 people, installation typically takes 45-90 minutes for first-time installers. Once you're familiar with the process, it can be done in 30 minutes. We recommend professional installation if you're not comfortable working on your vehicle's roof.
Can I install the tent myself?
Yes, but you'll need 2-3 people for safety. The tent is heavy (110-165 lbs) and requires lifting onto your roof. You'll need basic tools: socket set, torque wrench, and allen keys. Follow our detailed installation guide or watch our video tutorial. Professional installation is available through our partner network.
What tools do I need for installation?
Required tools: torque wrench (10-100 lb-ft range), socket set (10mm-19mm), allen key set, measuring tape, level, and safety gloves. Optional but helpful: step ladder, thread lock compound, protective blanket for roof, and silicone spray lubricant.
Do you offer professional installation?
Yes! We partner with certified installers across the country. Professional installation typically costs $150-300 and includes proper mounting, torque verification, and a safety check. Contact us to find an installer near you.

Vehicle Compatibility

Will a roof tent fit my vehicle?
Most SUVs, crossovers, trucks, and wagons can support a roof tent. Use our Vehicle Checker tool to confirm compatibility. Your vehicle needs: roof load capacity of 150+ lbs, roof rails or crossbars (or ability to install them), and adequate roof space for the tent dimensions.
Do I need roof rails or a roof rack?
Yes, you need either factory roof rails with crossbars or an aftermarket roof rack system. The tent mounts to the crossbars using universal mounting brackets. If your vehicle has factory rails, you'll just need to add crossbars. We can recommend compatible crossbar systems for your specific vehicle.
Can I put a roof tent on my truck?
Absolutely! Trucks are excellent for roof tents. You'll need a truck bed rack or roll bar system with crossbars. The tent mounts to the bed rack just like it would to roof rails. This setup is popular with Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, and Chevrolet Colorado owners.
What vehicles are most popular for roof tents?
Popular choices include: Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Tacoma, Subaru Outback, Ford F-150, Land Rover Defender, Toyota RAV4, and Chevrolet Colorado. However, our tents work with hundreds of vehicle models. Use our Vehicle Checker for specific compatibility.

Usage & Care

How do I set up and close the tent?
Setup: Unbuckle cover straps, unfold tent using gas struts (takes 60 seconds), attach ladder, and you're ready. Closing: Remove ladder, fold tent back using gas struts, secure cover straps. The gas struts make the process smooth and require minimal effort. Watch our setup video for a visual guide.
How do I clean my roof tent?
For regular cleaning: brush off loose dirt, spot clean with mild soap and water, rinse thoroughly, and let dry completely before closing. For deep cleaning: set up tent, clean all fabric surfaces with tent-specific cleaner, rinse well, and allow to dry fully (8-12 hours) before packing. Never use bleach or harsh chemicals.
Is the tent waterproof?
Yes! TREKFAR tents use 280g ripstop poly-cotton canvas with a waterproof rating of 2000mm+. All seams are sealed and taped. The shell is made from weather-resistant composite material. The tents are tested in extreme conditions and proven 100% leak-proof. We recommend reapplying waterproofing treatment annually for optimal performance.
How does the tent perform in wind and storms?
TREKFAR tents are built for all weather conditions. The hard shell design and rigid frame system provide excellent wind resistance. Tents are tested to withstand winds up to 50 mph when properly mounted. The low profile design reduces wind resistance. For extreme storms, we recommend closing the tent for safety.
What temperature range can I camp in?
Our tents are four-season capable. The poly-cotton canvas provides excellent insulation and breathability. Comfortable range: 20°F to 100°F. For extreme cold, add a sleeping bag rated for the temperature. For extreme heat, keep windows open for ventilation. The mattress provides insulation from ground temperature.
